With the rising popularity of satellite technology available to the average person, many people are wanting to find a satellite view of their house or the neighbourhood surrounding them. This is quite easy to do, and can be acheived using the following methods...

Google Maps - This is by far the most popular method. All you need to do is go to http://maps.google.com/ and enter in your home address in the supplied search box. Once Google Maps has found your address and zoomed in, wou will notice some buttons on the top left corner. Clicking on "Satellite" will allow you to get a birds eye view of your house. Keep in mind that depending on your location, you may or may not get a good result. Google has not yet indexed the entire globe, but they are continuing to update it all the time, so it's worth coming back and checking again at a later date. 

Another cool thing you can do with Google Maps is "Street View". This allows you to take a virtual walk down your street from ground level and view houses, shops, and even people that happened to be walking past at the time the picture was taken. Once again, if your street is not available, it may well be in the future.

Keep in mind that these images are not live, they may have been taken years before, but it's still a fairly cool tool for the price it costs ($0).

Some other tools that can be used to view a satellite image of your house include Microsoft Virtual Earth, Flash Earth   (which allows you to view satellite imagery from a few different providers), Open Aerial Map, Yahoo Maps  and Ask.com Maps.

As well as being able to view a satellite image of your house, these sites allow you to visit remote destinations, get driving directions from one location to another, view popular landmarks (eg, The Great Wall of China or the Pyramids of Egypt) and use 3D technology to view terrain like mountains or the Grand Canyon.

A few years ago, this technology was only available to government organisations. But now, anyone can get a satellite view of my house, or anyones house, for free.
